We build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

Habitat for Humanity of the Lowcountry is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. We believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities.

What We Build

Habitat homes around the world are built according to the same three guiding principles:

  1. Simple. Habitat houses are modestly-sized. They are large enough for the homeowner family’s needs, but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs to a minimum.

  2. Decent. Habitat houses are designed to reflect the local climate and culture and are built using quality, locally-available building materials.

  3. Affordable. The labor of volunteers and partner families, efficient building methods, modest house sizes and no-profit loans make it affordable for low-income families to purchase Habitat houses.

Other facts about Habitat Homes:

  • We build new single family residences based on the size and needs of each homeowner family.

  • Sometimes we renovate existing homes or condos using these same guiding principles.

  • Habitat homes make efficient use of living spaces and function well for all family members.

  • We strive to meet sustainable, energy-efficient building practices that are both environmentally friendly and cost-effective for low-income homeowners to maintain.

Where We Build

Beaufort & Jasper Counties

We just wrapped up t a two-phase, 32 home community located off Alex Patterson Road on land that was generously donated by the town of Hilton Head Island. Funding for infrastructure and site preparation was provided by our selfless partners Goldie and Helen Glenn and the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. Additionally, each home in The Glen is made possible by our incredible house sponsors, countless volunteers, and partner families, for whom we are eternally grateful. The last dedication was in December 2023.

We are currently waiting on permitting to start construction in Estill and Ridgeland.
