Every woman can make an impact

The mission of Women Build is to engage women in the effort to provide safe and decent homes for families in need of affordable housing. By recruiting, educating, and inspiring women, we can transform lives in our communities.

Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity of the Lowcountry has partnered with dozens of female-headed families to build strength and stability for their children through local fundraising and volunteer efforts. In recent years, more than half of the families that have partnered with Habitat outside of Women Build are also female-headed households.

About Women Build Events

Our Women Build events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving the community.

Any woman who wants to learn how to build and construct a home is invited to join us. No experience is necessary. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals, and also alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience to help improve the community that we share.

Women Build is also a terrific way to involve your friends and family of all ages in crucial work with a lasting impact. Women helping women sends a positive and powerful message. You can also come alone, and make new friends. The atmosphere is collaborative and friendly.

Who gets a house?

We believe that everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home.

To carry out our vision, we partner with individuals and families from application through construction to when the keys are handed over. Working with us from beginning to end helps prospective homeowners prepare for the responsibilities of homeownership, including learning about personal finances, mortgages, maintenance, upkeep and much more.

Habitat’s path to homeownership is an important and in-depth process, requiring hard work, time and dedication that helps to ensure the long-term success of homeowners.

There are several ways you can get involved

  • Learn new construction skills needed to effectively contribute to Habitat’s mission.

  • Help build a houses at a Women Build event.

  • Join other community volunteers and homeowners to build strength and stability through shelter.

  • Provide a meal or refreshments to volunteers during build events.

  • Donate toward the upcoming Women Build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are men allowed?

Yes, men are welcome. In fact, the future homeowner or part of the training staff may be men. Women Build provides a place for women to learn the skills needed to build a home, but that does not exclude men from participating.

How does Habitat empower women?

Our goal with Women Build is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence. We at Habitat have the ability to provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and given these tools, women can succeed in changing their communities.

Through Women Build, we can also increase our advocacy efforts regarding the housing challenges women face while collecting valuable information which demonstrates the many benefits of female homeownership.

Does Women Build work internationally?

Yes, even though ownership and property rights for women can be particularly challenging in some countries. Since 1991, Women Build volunteers from all walks of life have come together to build stronger, safer communities all over the U.S. and internationally.
