An Answered Prayer
Everything is possible for one who believes– Mark 9:23
From a young age, Ada Williams knew that with faith and hard work she could be successful. This was the path she was on until she was in her 30’s and she suffered from an aneurysm and colon cancer. While never getting her balance fully back, Ada still tried to do what she could to support her family. She eventually opened a thrift shop in Estill, as a way to provide for them.
As an adult, Ada owned two homes. The first was a wooden structure that became unsafe more than 15 years ago. The second is a mobile home that she purchased from her late daughter. Unfortunately, this mobile home is falling apart around her. The floorboards are soft, the electricity is dangerous, the home has black mold, pipes continually bust, and there are repairs that must be done almost daily just to be able to function in the home.
Ada began praying that God would send help. Every day she prayed and called around to different agencies that could help her and her husband stay where they were, but have a safe home. After calling all over the state, she reached out to the Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity about building a house in Estill. The timing of the request was perfect as Habitat was just finishing a 32-home development on Hilton Head Island and was waiting for HUD funds to start their next one. Even though the affiliate’s service area only includes southern Beaufort and Jasper Counties, an exception was made and Ada’s request to partner with Habitat to build a new home was approved. This was truly an answered prayer.
Ada claims that this could not be a better situation. She is looking forward to every step of the process. She wants to be there every day to work with the volunteers as together they build her home. She hopes to learn a lot in the homebuyer classes. In the end, she is looking forward to having a safe home, one where she can rest well knowing she no longer has to worry about her home falling apart in the middle of the night.
Outside of the home itself, the other big thing she is looking forward to is having appliances that work. Currently she must have someone come pick up her laundry as she can’t handle carrying it to the laundromat. The other thing is to have a functioning kitchen. From a young age, Ada always cooked the family’s Sunday dinner. She looks forward to continuing that tradition, serving dinner to her three surviving children and eight grandchildren in her new home.
Ada’s faith has guided her throughout her entire life. She is a member of First Thankful Baptist where they often pray for miracles and God’s blessing. She feels this is just one answered prayer that the Lord has sent her throughout her life and is so thankful to God, to all who have contributed financially, all who will volunteer, all who are praying for her, and to Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity.
