SUPPORT PARTNER RESPONSIBILITIES

Support partners are members of the Family Support Committee and are committed to helping partner families achieve success in Habitat’s homeownership program, starting with their selection into the program and through the first few months after they move into their new homes. Their primary role is to support and encourage the homebuyer as they go through the process of preparing to be a new homeowner family, respecting the values and individuality of each family member.

Training

  • Each support partner will attend an introductory training session

  • Ongoing training will be provided as needed

Commitment

  • Responsibilities begin when you are matched with a homebuyer and will continue about six months after they move into their home.

  • Attend committee meetings, as needed

Responsibilities

  • Build a rapport with the homebuyer you have been matched to

  • Serve as a liaison between the homebuyer and Habitat to ensure that the homeowner understands the program requirements. The partner will help with:

    • Sweat equity - partners may contribute up to 20 hours

    • Making sure the homebuyer understands their down payment requirements and payment procedures

    • Prepare for the home dedication

  • Make at least two contacts per month with their homebuyer to ensure they are getting their sweat equity hours completed

  • Encourage their homebuyer to tap into any appropriate community resources

  • Work with Habitat’s family selection coordinator to integrate the homebuyer family into Habitat activities

  • Before your initial contact, become familiar with the family’s biography

  • Habitat’s family services coordinator can arrange your first introductory meeting

  • In your first meeting, share a bit of your own background and determine the best means for future communications
