The David Jones Home Project

David Jones, native Islander and Gullah descendant of the late “David Jones No. 2,” was a popular student and respected athlete at Hilton Head High School. In 1997, at the age of 24, David contracted a rare virus that affects the spinal column called Transverse Myelitis. David was following in his father’s footsteps in the shrimping industry and was a new father when the virus struck, leaving him a quadriplegic with no use of his arms and legs.

In  2007, David’s classmates rallied together and started a fundraiser to purchase a wheelchair accessible van for David. Once the fundraising story fundraiser spread, more than just classmates wanted to help David, in part because of the legacy of his family. Schoolmates, friends, business owners and community members joined in the quest to secure David a van and simultaneously honor the legacy of his ambitious father. What we found in this outpouring of community support was there’s a bit of a Seahawk in all of us.

We need your help again. In 2022, the home where David lived succumbed to a house fire from faulty wiring. With the help of classmates and friends, attorneys Sean Bolchoz and Becky Hale, and Habitat for Humanity of the Lowcountry, there is now an opportunity for a new home to be built for David on a small piece of property in the Mitchelville area! This home will be wheelchair accessible, handicapped equipped and include accommodation for his caregivers who help with daily needs.
